17. Pride
and Prejudice. A few female friends made me watch this movie during a beach
weekend. One of my male friends spent the entirety mocking it relentlessly. Not
to be caught out as a traitor to my gender, but by the end I was completely won
over. I usually can’t stand the Austen-Bronte cabal
of boredom that forces male English-class high school students all over the
country to regard reading and classtime q&a as “enhanced interrogation.” I
had every reason to dislike this movie, except that it’s outstanding.
